Nintendo showed off the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Wednesday, revealing that Brie Larson will be the voice of Rosalina in the process. It turns out that Larson has a history with Super Mario Galaxy, as the Scott Pilgrim actor once kicked her boyfriend out of the house over it.
A clip revealing that Larson most likely has a deeper connection to the Mario Galaxy games than anyone else in the sequel's cast has resurfaced following Nintendo's casting news. It's taken from the first video the actor ever posted on her YouTube channel in July 2020, which features a series of clips showing what her fans can expect from the channel, something Larson continues to update to this day.
The part that caught the attention of Mario fans five years ago (and was reported on by Nintendo Life), and has resurfaced now thanks to the casting news, is around the 10:55 mark when Larson discusses his love of video games. She reveals that the NES was her first console, and that Super Mario Bros, along with the original Nintendo Little Mermaid game, were her first games.
Don't mess with Brie Larson when she fights Bowser
When asked if she has any embarrassing stories about boyfriends who didn't like her love of video games, Larson immediately recalls falling out with her first boyfriend over Super Mario Galaxy. “I kicked my first boyfriend out of my house because I was trying to beat the last level of Super Mario Galaxy. He said I was taking it too seriously, so I kicked him out of my house,” Larson admitted.
Hey, we've all been there. If you love video games, there will have been several times in your life where someone has seen you get a little over-invested and told you “it's just a game”, which will have only upset you even more. I've never thrown anyone out of the house over it, but I get it.
Five years later, who takes Super Mario Galaxy too seriously now? Larson will voice Rosalina in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel that will feature elements from games she has such a strong affinity for that she was willing to end a relationship over it. Well, I guess the relationship ended. Larson refers to them as her “first boyfriend”. Maybe she just never let him in again after the Mario Galaxy incident.
The unearthed clip of Larson revealing how dedicated she is to the Galaxy games will only win Mario fans over even more. I have yet to see a single negative reaction to her casting as Rosalina. They've ranged from “oh yeah, that makes sense” to people thinking she's perfect for the role. While Benny Safdie wasn't as shocking as Chris Pratt's Mario reveal, he was a little more out of left field, but based on what little we heard about the new version of the villain in the trailer, I think it works.
