The Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3 is an option for beloved characters as it takes the story in unique directions, connecting to the events of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and represents a middle ground between a fully customized “Tav” and a more structured native character. Dark Urges is the amnesia of Bhaal, the God of Murder, who can reject or embrace his bloody fate. Heroes of Faerun and Adventure in Faerun acknowledge the popularity of Dark Urge with subclasses, feats, lore, and ready-made adventures perfect for playing as a Bhaalspawn.

Players looking to create a Dark Urge should try the Scion of the Three, a new Rogue subclass introduced in Heroes of Faerun. The Scion of the Three allows characters to swear allegiance to Bane, Bhaal, or Myrkul. Scions of the Three can intimidate enemies, damage their very aura, and increase the effectiveness of their Sneak Attack. In particular, choosing Bhaal as a patron grants the following:

  • Resistance to poison damage

  • Blade Ward cantrip

Multiclassing in Scion of the Three for just three levels gives Bloodthirst, which is used to teleport to and attack Bloodied enemies, an ability that appears to be directly inspired by Bhaalspawn Orin the Red. Players who want to play Dark Urge but aren't interested in being Rogues can also replace other abilities in their chosen class with Bloodthirst to add some Bhaalspawn flavor to their build.

Except for the Scion of the Three subclass, Heroes of Faerun contains lots of other Bhaal flavored goodies. The following boons would be perfect additions to any Dark Urge character:

  • Boon of Bloodshed – Gain advantage on Attack rolls after killing enemies, deal extra damage while Bloodied
  • Blessing of Terror – Become immune to the frightened condition, increase terror of frightened enemies, gain skill in intimidation
  • Boon of the Soul Drinker – Gain resistance to cold and necrotic damage, regain health when enemies are killed

While none of the backgrounds were introduced in the new one Dungeons and dragons books are directly tied to Dark Urge, the Dragon Cultist Background could easily be reworked to involve serving Bhaal's cult instead. Its feat, Cult of the Dragon Initiate, allows players to terrify nearby creatures and gain inspiration from their fear, which would suit Dark Urge's skills well.

There is also lots of information about the Dead Three and how to serve them in both books. The episode “Gods of Faerun” contains detailed information about Bhaal and his followers, while Adventure in FaerunThe “Baldur's Gate Gazetteer” details key Bhaal cult sites around the city, such as Candulhallow's Tombstones and the Temple in the Sewers where players can confront Orin in Baldur's Gate 3.

An adventure fit for a dark drift

In addition to subclasses, feats, backgrounds, and more, the new Forgotten Realms books include several premade ones Dungeons and dragons adventure. One in particular, “Blood Night,” seems tailor-made for Dark Urge players. It involves players finding themselves in an “assassination competition” held by several wealthy Bhaal-worshipping patriarchs. Players can easily insert their Dark Urge character into the story, either as a participant or someone trying to stop the bloodshed. Maybe that's what Dark Urge came up with after the events of Baldur's Gate 3 — stopping Bhaal's followers from sacrificing more souls to the Lord of Murder.
