Cooking in Vein plays a vital role in survival, offering a reliable way to restore health and give your character some much-needed comfort in a scary, post-apocalyptic world. Collecting supplies and scavenging resources is a necessity, and scattered around are more than enough ingredients to get you started on your culinary journey.

Whether you decide to farm for your lunch or work with what you’ve already got, there are plenty of recipes to choose from, and new ones are just waiting to be discovered. If you’re looking to find out everything the game has to offer, check out our cooking guide.

Cooking 101

A kitchen counter with all four cooking tools in it in Vein.

There are four cooking tools in the game with several variations (pot, dish, pan, and kettle), and while all can be used on a stove, fireplace, or campfire, each recipe will require a different tool.

Despite there being multiple types of pots and pans (large/small, etc.), they all do the same job, but some have a bigger capacity than others.

Finding the cooking tools can be random, as the world doesn’t tend to spawn items in the same place; however, some areas are more likely to have them than others. Be sure to focus your time on kitchen areas, whether it be residential houses or out-of-service businesses.

Cooking tools have been known to spawn in cardboard boxes scattered around the houses, but if you’re on a culinary mission, definitely focus on the areas you’d be most likely to find kitchenware in the real world.

If you’d like to start the game with the ability to cook the beginner recipes, choose the chef occupation when creating your character. You’ll have access to three of the cooking tools, a +25 to your cooking skills, and a magazine that will give you even more recipes when you reach the designated cooking level.

To level your cooking stats even faster, make it one of the three stats you specialize in when creating your character at the beginning. Choosing a specialty in cooking as well as the chef career will make you a culinary master in no time.

How To Cook

A stove in Vein cooking frozen fries.

Once you have all your tools and ingredients, cooking in Vein is very simple. The main thing to remember is that everything needs to be transferred from your personal inventory into the stove, campfire, or fireplace. Otherwise, when you turn the appliance ‘on’, nothing will happen.

You need your ingredients, any liquid if needed for the recipe, and the correct cooking tool. All information can be found in the recipe when opening the stove, etc., or we’ve listed them here.

If something in the recipe is red, then it’s missing, and you won’t be able to make your meal.

Everything in Vein cooks at a different speed, and some things will burn quickly if you aren’t paying attention. The progress bar will turn green when the food is close to being cooked.

If the process exceeds 100 percent, the meal will be burnt and can cause a stomachache or a similar unhappy buff.

If the meal has a skill buff attached to it, then you will only receive it if the food is cooked correctly. Once the item is cooked, you select it to move it out of the stove.

Turning the stove to ‘off’ won’t stop the food from cooking straight away. As the appliance cools, the food will continue cooking, and this could lead to it being burnt. Always remember to move the meal from the stove to avoid this.

Cooking magazines can be found throughout the world, adding to your recipe list, and while these also spawn randomly, dedicating your time to the same areas as the cooking tools will make it easier for you to track them down. The more recipes you want to learn, the higher your cooking level will need to be.

A quick way to level up your cooking without a lot of resources is to fill a container with water from a sink and put it on the stove to boil. This will passively increase your level without you needing to worry about burning any food you rely on.

Choosing to cook meals over eating the junk food found scattered on the map is a better way to keep your character going in the apocalypse, as they can get sluggish and drowsy. However, it’s always helpful to keep it on hand at the beginning, just in case.

Brewing Recipes

The brewing recipes below follow the same cooking process as the meals. However, they have the option of using the kettle cooking tool, which the others do not, and it usually requires a liquid for it to brew.

To add water to the stove or cooking appliance, approach a sink with an empty container in your inventory and select the fill option to fill it with water. You can then add the water to the stove with your other ingredients.
