After over four years of fairly persistent rumors, it appears that the alleged one is in development Final Fantasy 9 remake may be “on hold,” according to industry insider NateTheHate. After being asked in a post on X if he had any news about the rumored remake, NateTheHate explained that the game was likely put on hold, and it's currently up in the air if Square Enix will return to it.
None of that is a direct confirmation of the rumors Final Fantasy 9 remake is really in limbo at the moment, especially given that NateTheHate began his claims with “I would assume,” with those assumptions simply based on the fact that he had “no new information to share.” This, as well as the insider's mixed track record, may be enough to justify fans continuing to hope that Final Fantasy 9 remake happens sooner rather than later.
The rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake may be hit with a major delay
One of the earliest triggers for the rumors surrounding a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake was when it was listed on a leak from Nvidia's GeForce Now 2021 in the company of several unannounced games from other publishers. Since then, rumors have persisted, fueled of course by the original game's “niche, but beloved” status Final Fantasy community. Plus, with how successful Final Fantasy 7 Remake the trilogy has been, a Final Fantasy 9 remake could be a good step forward for Square Enix.
These rumors heated up even more when Square Enix launched a special website for Final Fantasy 925th anniversary earlier this year. Of course, this convinced fans of the title even more that a remake was going to happen, with many of them referencing the potential project in a Reddit post about the new site – user CompetitivePatient33 even saying they “can't wait for the remake.”
But NateTheHate's latest comment about the rumor Final Fantasy 9 remake potentially being paused really doesn't bode well for the game, and is just more bad news for fans. Until something is confirmed or denied by Square Enix, however, it's just more rumors fighting rumors. Also, it's worth noting that NateTheHate didn't say that Final Fantasy 9 remake was canceled, but simply that it may not happen in the timeline that fans may have hoped for.
