Too many players, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the only thing that made the covid-19 lockdown bearable. It was truly released at the perfect time, as players could distract themselves from the horrors of the outside world by paying off their debt to an adorable raccoon and designing the island getaway of their dreams. Nevertheless, after the release of the Happy Home Paradise DLC, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has stopped receiving new content, leaving die-hard gamers wondering what's next for their favorite series.
With the future of Animal Crossing IP currently shrouded in mystery, many are likely to apply Animal Crossing-like experiences to fill the void. This has been a consistent practice for fans of games that Stardew Valley for years now, so it's only natural that the same approach is applied to Animal Crossing. While some controversial Animal Crossing rip-offs have appeared before, gamers looking for a high-quality experience that checks some of the same boxes while still creating their own path have a breathtaking project to look forward to: Animula Nook. In fact, given where the game appears to be in its development process, as well as the platform choice of the LilliLandia title, Animula Nook maybe just steal the attention Animal Crossing fans.
Animula Nook's TBA Switch 2 release coincides with Animal Crossing's release pattern
Via Animula Nooks trailer and official website give players confirmation of a game-changing detail. In addition to PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic Games Store, the cozy title will be released for Nintendo Switch 2. This could end up making it a direct competitor to Animal Crossing franchise on that series' home turf, which while it wouldn't matter much if Animula Nook would be released in 2025 or 2026, it currently lacks a release window. While this is purely speculation, a 2027 or 2028 launch seems quite likely, as some sort of window would likely have been shared if it was further along in development. Interestingly, this proposed window would be right about when a new one Animal Crossing projects can be expected.
Even if Animula Nook surprises with a 2026 release date, if the game is as good as it looks and gets consistent updates it could put more pressure on the next Animal Crossing.
There are eight years between Animal Crossing: New Leaf and New horizonsit can be assumed that there will be a similar wait for the new title, especially with the added pressure to perform thanks to all the new fans that the last game acquired. It has been over 5 years New horizons debuted, meaning a new Animal Crossing releasing in late 2027 or early 2028 is a safe bet. If that is indeed the case, there is a very real chance that it will Animal Crossing ends up going head-to-head with Animula Nookwhere both are compared even more than they normally would have been if released further apart.
Why Animula Nook is perfect for Animal Crossing fans
There are many reasons why Animal Crossing fans to give Animala Nook a chance, as there are some clear similarities between the two cozy games, such as:
-
NPCs for animals called Minies. Animula Nook features rabbit characters like Kayee, Septem and Pudding as well as a cat named Meowrio.
-
Focus on decoration, one of the defining elements of Animal Crossing franchise.
-
Deep character customization so players can make their protagonist look just like them.
But the game also has its own unique features, such as the concept of exploring a real environment as a small character as in the critically acclaimed It takes two. Players will turn clocks into rocking chair decorations, nest in milk cartons, and so on. Exploration also seems to be a big focus, as players will fly across the world on a cat ball called Wupa, collecting balls of sunshine for an unknown purpose. With a spectacular art style and this distinct mechanic, the game is little different Animal Crossing without straying too far from what makes that game special.
If Animula Nook lives up to its full potential and the actual game blows fans away as much as its reveal trailer did, Nintendo might just regret releasing it on the Switch 2, as it could end up making the next Animal Crossing feels a little less special. Maybe the two games will give each other some distance, and maybe players won't have to choose one or the other, but Animal Crossings latest release gaps and the lack of a release date for Animula Nook leave the door open for an intense competition.
