Once accused of creating a gaming adaptation of Paizo's iconic TTRPG setting, Starfinder: Afterlight Developer Epicteller's Entertainment knew that the characters had to come first. The heart of a good table game is its players and the characters they create. When table top games are adapted to video game format, recruitable companions fulfill the role of its fellow players. Inspired by titles such as Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Baldur's Gate 3, The team behind Starfinder: Afterlight Worked to create a memorable role of characters for players to adventure with.
Up to the launch of Starfinder: Afterlight's Very successful Kickstarter, the team showed revealing trailers to several of the game's companions. Four companions were revealed in this way: Kole Straser, Tycho, LU-323 and Sterling. In addition, the wavy spacecraft Captain Khali (Carolina Ravassa) was shown to celebrate Kickstarter's debut. Epicteller's Entertainment founder Ricard Pillosu talked to Game Rant about the process of creating every companion, the inspiration behind them and themes focused on in their story.
Kole and Lu were inspired by film and manga
Pillosu revealed that Kole (Fred Tatasciore) and LU (Melissa Medina) were some of the earliest characters created for the game. Kole was developed by author Isabel Perez, who was inspired to give him a prospective action star personality after watching the film American Ninja. Perez approached him and said, “This is so cheesy. I love it. We have to put it in Starfinder. ” The result was Kole, a Vesk soldier with dreams of being an action star from the 1980s. Fans have already compared the character with Guardians of the Galaxy, Which, admits Pillosu, was not what the team originally went for, but they were happy to hear.
Epicteller's Entertainment's other authors, Felix Rios, was inspired to create Android LU-323 by Mangan Battle Angel Alita. LU is a character, explained Pillosu, whose story centers around the theme of free will – she constantly questions how much of her personality and actions that really are herself and how much is her programming. Describes LU, Pillosu said:
“Every time [Lu] Do something, she guesses herself: “Do I do it because this is my programming?” Even romance. If she is approaching you, she thinks, no, maybe it is my programming trying to make me seduce you. She thinks “I want to know if it's me or not.” She asks, how does our background define us? “
Sterling and Tycho have become early fan favorites
Two other recruitable companions have been shown via revealing trailers: Tycho (Inel Tomlinson), a YSOKI operative and Sterling (James Alexander), a human Borai soles. Pillosu revealed that Tycho has become an unexpected fan favorite since his debut. “People really like Tycho,” he laughed. “We think he is very cool, but people think he is even cooler than we take him for.” Fans have already contacted Pillosu and his colleagues Epicteller's co -founder Albert Jane, which indicates that they should make an animated series after the adventure of Kole and Tycho. Fans feel that the two have excellent comic chemistry, and many are eager to see their interactions in the game.
In the meantime, Sterling has gained popularity because of his suave, gentlely nature, with some fans who immediately linked him as their romantical alternative. Sterling was a character that Pillosu and the team struggled with during development, as they were worried that a traditional gentlely character – is described as “King In space ” – would not reason with a modern audience. The character underwent many different iterations and designs before Epicteller's Entertainment team found something they liked. But Pillosus concerns seem unfounded, since the reaction to Sterling has generally been positive, with many already drawn to his appearance.
There is at least one recruiting companion who has not yet been revealed, as are several important NPCs and other characters. The team will hopefully reveal more in the future as the game's Kickstarter progresses, and it goes into early access in 2026.
