Was founded by the Art Director of 2009's Flower and 2012's TripDeveloper Giant Squid has laid out a steady stream of sleeping hits over the past decade or so. 2016's Abzu was a contemplative underwater adventure, 2020s The roadless was a more action -focused experience and Giant Squid's latest company, The Sea swordis a wonderful mix of the studio's past and present.
Another compact adventure, The Sea sword Sets meditative vibes above all else, but the game is more than robust enough to keep players connected for their entire brief around.
Swords of the sea is an elegant, streamlined adventure
The Sea sword Opens with a fascinating shot of a swirling water pool. The camera follows a round drop of this essential fluid when it gracefully falls on top of a stone statue and gradually fills it with life. This now living statue is The Sea swordPlayer character, an old warrior who has the task of restoring this dry, desolate world to their former underwater glory. With his reliable sword -shaped surfboard in hand went players to explore the first of The Sea swordSeveral well-themed cinema, a huge desert that covers a variety of old temples.
The Sea swordGameplay loop beats a strong balance between the game's more stripped nature as Trip and Abzuand a little more mechanically complex experiences such as The roadless. Players use their sword surfboard to elegantly slide through different environments, overcome very simple puzzles and platforms challenges and “reason” with an object in the environment to bring water and marine life back to the surrounding area.
Although this loop is simple, it is given some depth via The Sea swordLevel design. Most of The Sea swordThe tenders release players in a small open area, and they get free fabric about how they approach the level's few goals. There is no objective marker, which forces players to rely on context lines in the environment and their own desire to explore the game's clearly signposted interesting points.
Exploration is of course encouraged through The Sea swordOptional content, with players who can find well-written Lore Obeliska hidden on every level that describes the history of the world and the mysterious origin of the character. Players can also search a handful of challenge areas at each level, with some of the game's best creature Tony Hawk Pro Skater-The -like arenas that have players who grind on ancient rails, skates along the temple walls and perform a series of smoothly animated airborne tricks to achieve a high score.
By implementing these challenges and carefully exploring each level will reward players with 'Tetra', a resource that can be exchanged for new tricks and abilities in the game. On paper these rewards are not the most exciting reasons for exploring The Sea swordVaried cinema, but they are a fantastic excuse to continue to get involved in the game's exciting traversal mechanics.
The Sea Svärd: Tony Seal Pro Surfer
The Sea sword'S' surfboard 'is an absolute joy to control. Players simply need to push forward, and the board will skate smoothly over a biom's surface, gradually get speed on the downhill and react naturally to the terrain below it. Giant Squid has taken The roadless'Rushing sense of speed and refined it even longer and delivers a streamlined, seamless experience that gives The Sea sword A powerful foundation.
This strong foundation is then built consistently all the time The Sea swordWith each level that adds at least one new traversal mechanic to the loop. These mechanics often take the form of new environmental objects that appear every time the player restores an area, such as bioluminating jellyfish that the player can bounce on to reach new heights and high tangs that they can ride vertically.
The Sea swordRegular drop feeding of new mechanics results is a perfect marriage to games and story. The more players restore the world around them, the more game benefits they get. And the more traversal techniques are at the player's disposal, the more engrossing The Sea swordThe game-to-the-moment game will be.
The Sea swordStreamlined traversal mechanics are supported by smooth performance on PS5.
The Sea sword is a truly restorative journey
But just like fans of TripThe Abzuand The roadless would expect, while The Sea swordGames are really fun, the game's most impressive qualities are in their presentation and atmosphere. Simply expressed, The Sea sword is a really breathtaking game.
The Sea sword Carry over the minimalist art style found in Giant Squid's previous works. Character and animal models are given simple forms that are clearly defined with strong line work, which gives them a clear look while letting the game's environments take the center. Each of The Sea swordBioms offers a completely unique set of visual delicacies, ranging from exciting architecture to beautifully stylized surfaces that shift playfully under the player's board.
The Sea sword Also has a lively color palette, which is elevated at every turn of any phenomenal lighting that dances happily on top of each biom terrain. The game's dynamic camera also delivers some remarkable assists, with the panning carefully around the player while turning to maintain the feeling of speed and zooming out at specific moments to hammer a powerful sense of scale as they approach new areas.
Any given frame of The Sea sword Is a screenshot-worthy, but it is in motion that the game's visuals really sing. But they are not the only exceptional part of The Sea swordpresentation.
Echoes in the wells of silence
Minimalist as its art style, The Sea swordSound design does a lot with very little. The silent yet sharp sound of rushing wind accompanies the player's every move and the subtle but satisfactory crane on the metallic board on sand, stone or ice follows each jump. The Sea sword uses its discreet sounds to accentuate each game in the game perfectly.
The partnership between giant octopus and known baften-winning composer Austin Wintory continues with The Sea swordAnd his score steals the show again. Wintory's brand sound gives a constant sense of calm The Sea swordThe game-to-moment game, and the score's gradual ramp-up when players get momentum is always exciting to experience.
The Sea swordRemarkable presentation gathers and goes hand in hand with games to deliver an incredibly soothing and contemplative experience. Sliding without effort to a goal and respiratory life back into the harsh wilderness is infinitely fulfillment, with lush foliage and beautifully animated sea life that slowly fills the area while the relaxing sound of flowing water and Wintory's soft but powerful points fill the air.
The Sea sword It really feels like a restorative journey, not only in the literal sense, but also in the emotional sense. Every recovery in the game felt like I calmed something deep inside myself, and the quiet journey between the goals lightened my mind, relaxed my shoulders and reminded me of breathing. The Sea sword is much more than an interactive art installation; It is a deeply satisfactory meditation journey. But that trip does not last forever.
Trance comes to a sudden end
The Sea sword Is only about two and a half hours long. It will not be a surprise to fans of Abzu and TripBut it can catch new players from guard, especially considering the sudden nature at the end of the game. Fixed The Sea sword Has excellent stimulation through the majority of their driving time, the last 15 minutes feels like a little blur, and the end feels a bit rushed. It is a fun set and the emotional beats land quite well, but The Sea swordThe end could have used only one or two additional levels to build up their finale correctly.
However, players are encouraged to stay after the credits. The Sea sword Offers a new Game Plus mode that adds some new abilities and modifiers to Core Gameplay Loop. These do not drastically change the experience, but they are a decent incentive for players who want to experience the calm of the game again.
The Sea sword Coming to PlayStation Plus Extra on the launch day.
The Sea sword is the symbol too short and sweet. All aspects of the game's presentation, from visuals to sound design to points, are the best they can be, and they all go hand in hand with the game's exceptionally flexible and engaging traversal mechanics to deliver a peaceful, introspective experience that is more than deserving only about someone's time.
