Like Dexter's adoptive father, Harry always knew that it would be a darkness within Dexter, ever since he saved the young boy from a shipping container filled with his own mother's blood. Dexter's killing of animals made Harry aware that one day people would be next, so he helped introduce Harry's code to ensure that Dexter only killed criminals and would never get stuck. Harry was the first to know Dexter's dark passengers and even gave his blessing to kill, but to see it happen firstly got Harry to take his own life.

Brian Moser was the first to find out who Dexter really was. After all, Brian Dexter was a relative. Brian had followed his brother carefully and discovered his secret as a serial killer and thus spurred Brian to start a game for Dexter to find out the truth about his past and his brother. Brian tried to get Dexter to go with him as brothers born with blood and dependent on blood relief, but Dexter chose to kill his only living blood in relation to saving his adopted sister and retaining the code.

James Doakes
The suspected police edge
James Doakes has always been suspicious of Dexter. Doakes was a master and knew there was something that Dexter was hiding, only it was much worse than he could have imagined. Doakes discovered that Dexter was a serial killer after finding his blood glass in his apartment and then discovering Dexter with limbs in the trash. Although he knew the truth, Doakes would not make it alive because of Dexter's obsessive -sighted, who always found out the truth.

Lila West was the first woman to show Dexter that it is okay to have a dark passenger. However, Lila was not aware that this dark passenger was a serial killer, but even when she found out after a sexual throw with what she thought was a drug addict in recovery at a NA meeting, she still persecuted him. Lila discovered Dexter's truth and even covered it by killing Doakes, but this stint of serial murder made Lila dangerous and a primarily goal for Dexter so that he could keep his secret and make sure Doakes was avenged.

Miguel's growing impatience and lack of faith in the legal system saw him trying to take things in his own hands, just to catch Dexter quite literally red -handed in the middle of a murder of the man who killed Miguel's brother. While Miguel never knew that Dexter was Bay Harbor Butcher, he knew Dexter was a serial killer who only killed criminals, and while trying to go with him for that company, he was finally consumed by his obsession with death until he became Dexter the next victim.
