Animal Crossing: 10 Things From Old Games New Horizons Cut

New Horizons is the most innovative Animal Crossing to date, but Nintendo still made one too many cuts during development.

Every player has their favorite villager. Whether they’re cute, sporty, or snooty, each animal has their unique charm and style, so, luckily, New Horizons lets players have a say in who leaves the town. Across five console games and several spin-offs, there are hundreds of villagers to choose from, but some of them easily rank among the cutest in the entire franchise.

Updated March 26, 2025, by Blaise Santi: This month celebrated the 5-year anniversary of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but fans of the franchise are already looking towards the future. Since Nintendo’s announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, Animal Crossing fanatics are anticipating a new entry in the series on the console, though judging by the nearly 8-year wait between mainline entries prior to the release of New Horizons, there might be a lot more waiting in store. Thankfully, Animal Crossing fans are pretty used to waiting at this point, so in the interest of walking down memory lane, this list takes a look at five additional villagers from the series who are some of the cutest in the Animal Crossing series.

Ribbot

This Villager Is Metal As Hell

Species

Birthday

February 13th

Saying

“Never rest, never rust.”

Hobby

Catchphrase

zzrrbbitt

Ribbot has been a part of the Animal Crossing franchise since the very beginning in spite of the fact that, technically, he’s not even an animal! He’s one of four villagers who are robots, and he is easily the cutest of them all. In previous games, the interior design of his home looked like the moon, but in recent games, Ribbot opts for a more scientific, lab-inspired home.

Although his early appearances in the franchise may have been a bit unsettling due to his robotic nature, more recent appearances have made Ribbot look as friendly as any other villager! However, players probably wouldn’t want to get into a weightlifting contest with him.

Zucker

Cute, Food-Themed Cephalopod

Species

Octopus

Birthday

March 8th

Saying

“There’s no such thing as luck.”

Hobby

Nature

Catchphrase

bloop

Octopi are a rare species in the Animal Crossing franchise. There are only four total octopi villagers: Cephalobot, Marina, Octavian, and Zucker. Fittingly, his appearance seems inspired by Japanese cuisine, specifically “takoyaki,” which is especially prominent due to the sauce-like texture on his head.

Zucker’s outfit also feels appropriate to this theme, looking like some sort of sushi chef. Of all the food-based villagers in the Animal Crossing games, Zucker’s design feels the most inspired, and it also helps that, as a villager, he’s quite laid-back and friendly.

38

Stu

He Loves The Outdoors

ACNH_STU

Species

Bull

Birthday

April 20th

Saying

“As a cow grows, so do its nostrils.”

Hobby

Nature

Catchphrase

moo-dude

As far as chill villagers go in Animal Crossing, it’s hard to get cooler than Stu, a blue bull who originated in the original Nintendo 64 Animal Forest but has had a few absences in titles like Wild World and City Folk. However, as of New Leaf, Stu’s interior design tastes are a lot more interesting, taking after an alleyway or sidewalk.

Though his home might not be the coziest, Stu’s a very friendly and laid-back neighbor to have on the island. He might be a little one-track-minded when it comes to thinking about food, but given how well he gets along with other villagers, it’s hard to blame him for his lazy personality.

37

Piper

She’s Surprisingly Energetic

ACNH_PIPER

Species

Bird

Birthday

April 18th

Saying

“When there’s life, there’s hope.”

Hobby

Play

Catchphrase

chickadee

Piper’s especially a great villager for those who love neighbors who love to play! Although her original design was much more traditionally adorable, Piper’s newer redesign may intimidate some players who might assume she’s rather sassy or lazy. The opposite is true; when players make Piper their friend, they’ll see she’s as chipper as they come!

Some may find her forgetful, but it’s ultimately hard to leave a conversation with Piper and not feel charmed. The only villagers she struggles to get along with are those who are traditionally cranky, meaning she’s great to keep around if players have a happy-go-lucky group of neighbors.

36

Stitches

The Only Cuddly Stuffed Animal

animal-crossing-new-horizons-stitches-thinking

Species

Cub

Birthday

February 10th

Saying

“A stitch in time saves nine!”

Hobby

Play

Catchphrase

stuffin

Stitches may look like a bear cub, but design-wise, he’s more of a stuffed animal — a one-of-a-kind villager in the Animal Crossing series. Even the interior design of his home resembles a child’s playroom, though in New Horizons, it’s been slightly upgraded to appear a little bit older. Nonetheless, Stitches is about as adorable as it gets.

If the character’s childlike design isn’t enough to convince players of his cuteness, just watch him interact with others who have that lazy personality. Their conversations about superheroes and comic books will be especially adorable!

35

Goldie

A Golden Neighbor

goldie inside home in new horizons

Species

Dog

Birthday

December 27

Saying

“A little bit of happiness is better than a lot of anguish.”

Hobby

Nature

Catchphrase

woof

Goldie is about as classic as it gets for Animal Crossing villagers. She made her first appearance in Doubutsu no Mori, the Japan-exclusive first game in the franchise. Though she has a Normal personality, players who are lucky enough to welcome her to their village will find her a very reliable and pleasant neighbor.

It’s also rare that players will miss getting to spend time with Goldie, considering she wakes up at 5 am every morning and goes to bed at 1 am. A 20-hour day is plenty of time to get things done, but that just goes to show how much Goldie loves the outdoors!

34

Spork

Always Down For Fun

Spork waving

Species

Pig

Birthday

September 3rd

Saying

“It’s never too late for a snack.”

Hobby

Play

Catchphrase

snork

Spork may have the Lazy personality, but he’s always down to roughhouse with other villagers! He also gets along with many different personality types among the villagers, even outside special events or holidays.

Although some players have detested Spork for his generally greedy love of food, there’s no denying that in recent games he’s one of the cutest Pig characters. In Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, he’s even a lover of books, showing that his laziness doesn’t mean he isn’t productive in other ways.

33

Bunnie

Friendly & Furry

Bunnie frowning at a villager

Species

Rabbit

Birthday

May 9th

Saying

“Hare today, gone tomorrow.”

Hobby

Fashion

Catchphrase

tee-hee

Another villager who has been in every game of the Animal Crossing franchise, Bunnie is one of the cutest and most fashionable neighbors a player can encounter. She collects pink furniture, making her an easy neighbor to buy presents for.

As far as neighbors go, Bunnie is fairly low maintenance and gets along with almost every personality type. Some players may get annoyed by her talkative personality, but others will feel lucky to have such a positive influence on their island.

32

Colton

A Real Charming Prince

Species

Horse

Birthday

May 22nd

Saying

“Make hay while the sun shines.”

Hobby

Nature

Catchphrase

Some players may see Colton with his Smug personality type and think he’s too pretentious for their village. However, those who get the chance to know him will become endeared by his cute design, resembling some kind of Disney prince with his red cape and blonde hair. Sadly, he’s one of the few personality types who can only move into a village after the player becomes mayor in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Even Colton’s home will inspire jealousy in other players with its sleek design and expensive decor. Thankfully, Colton is welcoming enough to visitors to make him seem a lot more down-to-earth than his cute design might imply.

31

Blanche

Worth Warming Up To

Animal Crossing New Horizons End of Visit

Species

Ostrich

Birthday

December 21st

Saying

“Nothing beats personal experience.”

Hobby

Nature

Catchphrase

quite so

Upon first meeting Blanche the ostrich, a lot of players might find her too proud and arrogant, which is a result of her Snooty personality type. However, as time goes on, Blanche will warm up to players, so only those who really commit to knowing her will appreciate her endearing design and personality.

What makes Blanche especially great to have as a neighbor on the island is how well she gets along with Cranky personality types, who can often become naturally isolated from others. Plus, her adorable black kimono gives her a very laid-back feeling design-wise that’s a huge contrast to her Snooty behavior.

30

Sydney

She Always Has A G’Day

Species

Koala

Birthday

June 21st

Saying

“Sail wherever the wind takes you.”

Hobby

Music

Catchphrase

sunshine

Koalas can be quite rare as far as villager species go. For players who also love these adorable Australian marsupials, Sydney is an ideal neighbor to stumble upon in most Animal Crossing games. With her Normal personality type, Sydney is very generous and will often bring the player presents for no reason whatsoever.

What will really make Sydney a lovable neighbor in the Animal Crossing series is her tendency to sing almost anywhere at any time, without even needing music to accompany her.

29

Poncho

Courageous And Cute Cub

Poncho drinking from a teacup in his house

Species

Bear cub

Birthday

January 2nd

Saying

“Fortune favors the brave!”

Hobby

Fitness

Catchphrase

li’l bear

Poncho has appeared in every single Animal Crossing game and remains one of the cutest and friendliest villagers in the franchise in New Horizons. As a Jock, Poncho can often be found exercising in his home, but what’s even stronger than his physique is his energetic personality!

Some villagers may be bothered by Poncho’s enthusiasm for exercise, but lots of players might see this cuddly blue bear and simply just want to spend as much time with him as possible. It’s only unfortunate that, for a character named “Poncho,” he doesn’t usually wear any, even when it rains.

28

Lucky

Cute & Spooky

Lucky speaking to villager.

Species

Dog

Birthday

November 4th

Saying

“Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

Hobby

Play

Catchphrase

rrr-owch

Lucky is a dog that proves one can be both cute and spooky at the same time. He is a highly desired villager for his unique design, being a dog with glowing eyes in a full-body cast. It is up to fan interpretation as to whether he is actually a mummy, or if he’s alive and considered lucky to have survived some incident (since his name is Lucky).

While Lucky may look spooky, he is a villager with a lazy personality, so his favorite activities are napping, snacking, and being an all-around wholesome individual.

27

Sherb

Adorably Lazy

animal crossing sherb

Species

Goat

Birthday

January 18th

Saying

“Forty winks is never enough.”

Hobby

Nature

Catchphrase

bawwww

Sherb was a new villager added with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and is an adorable little pale blue goat with a blue lock of hair atop his head. Sherb is a lazy personality villager, but this just makes him all the more endearing. He’ll often tell the player how the bugs in the walls are talking to him and he’s just overall super cute in everything he does.

Sherb’s house is very neat and tidy and is largely in hues of green and purple. Sherb has a love of napping, and this is also emphasized by his favorite K.K. Slider song, Hypno K.K.

26

Tad

Derpily Endearing

Animal Crossing's Tad in a yellow t-shirt with a one on it

Species

Frog

Birthday

August 3rd

Saying

“Take a leap!”

Hobby

Play

Catchphrase

sluuuurp

Tad is a sweet little Frog villager with his two eyes on top of his oval head. His design, from his massive pupils to his squiggly mouth, is undeniably adorable – enough to make any player want him to stay. Even cuter, his name comes from Tadpole, meaning he really is just a little guy.

Tad has the jock personality, meaning he’s serious about exercise and often very energetic. This is best demonstrated in New Horizons, where he can be seen running around with his arms out like a plane whenever he feels like it. His look has stayed almost the same from his first appearance in the original Animal Crossing, proving that sometimes simplicity is key to good design.

25

Ione

Cosmically Cute

Ione the Squirrel in their room

Species

Squirrel

Birthday

September 11th

Saying

“I was born under a lucky star.”

Hobby

Fashion

Catchphrase

gleam

Squirrels are automatically known as some of the cutest villagers in the Animal Crossing series. Ione, introduced in 2.0 of New Horizons, definitely did not disappoint in terms of design. Her entire look is space-themed, with her tail looking like a galaxy.

Part of what makes Ione cute is her names across multiple languages as they relate to cosmology or mythology. Ione itself is ancient Greek for a violet flower and a nymph in mythology. Her other names such as Spica and Vega are based on stars.

24

Maple

OG Cutie

Animal Crossing New Horizons

Species

Bear cub

Birthday

June 15th

Saying

“Waste not, want not.”

Hobby

Education

Catchphrase

honey

This cub villager looks like a total teddy bear. She has also been in every Animal Crossing game so far. She is the cutest of the cub villagers, with Stitches coming in at a close second (mostly because some players find him creepy instead of cute).

Maple’s fur is the color of maple syrup, so her look and her name fit together in a rather cute way. The light peach blush and hair tuft are also sweet little details. She is one cub players would not mind coming to their campsite.

23

Sasha

Adorable Seafoam Bunny

Split image of Sasha sitting and standing.

Species

Rabbit

Birthday

May 19th

Saying

“Timing is everything.”

Hobby

Fashion

Catchphrase

hoppity

Sasha is the cutest boy bunny of all with large sweet eyes and seafoam-colored fur. His ear tips, hands, and nose are white and his tail and hair have a splash of yellow. His personality is lazy, making him one of the cutest ACNH villagers next to Dom the sheep.

Many players thought Sasha would be a girl because of his feminine design and name, however, Sasha is actually a name used for both boys and girls.

22

Tipper

Snootily Sweet

Animal Crossing's Tipper the cow with a funky sweater on

Species

Cow

Birthday

August 25th

Saying

“It takes two to tango.”

Hobby

Fashion

Catchphrase

pushy

Tipper the cow is a lovely little cow with the snooty personality trait, meaning she struts around with a hilarious self-confidence that makes her even more endearing. This fabulous fashionista has lovely long eyelashes and a funky sweater on, with a cheeky little smile permanently plastered on her face. Unfortunately, some villagers might find her difficult to get along with and often Tipper will leave a conversation with another villager feeling sad and dejected – the perfect time for a player to swoop in and cheer her up.

There’s some adorableness about Tipper’s snootiness, particularly as she’s named after the act of “cow tipping” – a decidedly un-graceful hobby. Whoever designed the cows at Animal Crossing: Wild World did an excellent job, because despite her more abrasive dialogue, Tipper is the cutest.

21

Poppy

Fluffy Charmer

Animal Crossing New Horizons

Species

Squirrel

Birthday

August 5th

Saying

“It’s all about positive thinking!”

Hobby

Education

Catchphrase

nutty

The squirrel villagers are particularly cute due to their tiny bodies with their fluffy tails and large heads. Poppy was introduced in Animal Crossing City Folk and she was popular enough to appear in the Animal Crossing track in Mario Kart 8.

New Horizons certainly runs the gamut in terms of price tags, ranging from just a handful of Bells to hundreds of thousands for expensive houseware.

Out of the Animal Crossing personalities, Poppy’s is normal so she is pretty kind to the protagonist and easy to make friends with. Other squirrels that are super cute include Marshal and Peanut but Poppy takes a place on this list because her beady little eyes are just too adorable.
