After the debut of the Kanto region, Generation II introduced the Johto region too Pokémon fans. A large area known for its association with the many Legendary Pokémon found there, the three Generation II games were also the first to feature a Legendary Pokémon as a mascot for each title. A legendary mascot Pokémon, Ho-Oh, is Fire-type, but it certainly isn't the only powerful Fire-type in the region. There are countless other species, from the mountain-dwelling Slugma to the rare dog.
In the anime, Ash's adventures in the Johto region are some of his most popular. There he meets and befriends several Fire-type Pokémon, such as starter Pokémon Cyndaquil. However, there are several other Fire-type Pokémon in the Johto region that Ash encounters but does not catch. From a determined Magby to a compassionate Houndoom, these Pokemon also serve as examples of the awesome Fire-type Pokemon found in Johto.

In Generation II, the concept of Pokémon breeding was first introduced, allowing players to obtain Pokémon eggs. Along with this mechanic, special unevolved Pokémon known as baby Pokémon also debuted. These Pokemon cannot be bred, and were initially only obtainable if the player was able to obtain the baby Pokemon as an egg. For the most part, baby Pokemon only evolve with high friendship and can sometimes learn rare moves when born.
One such baby Pokémon is Magby, the former form of the powerful Fire-type Magmar. Trainer Satchel has a very strong Magby as his partner Pokémon, and although Ash complimented the Live Coal Pokémon, Satchel's desire was to evolve Magby into a Magmar. When Team Rocket captured Magby and several others, it worked with Ash's Cyndaquil to create an escape. Later, Magby evolved into Magmar and successfully sent Team Rocket blasting away again.
Magcargo is Slugma's evolved form

Slugma was introduced in Generation II, but in this era's games it could only be found in Kanto. However, as seen in the anime, Slugma has been found in the Johto region. After reaching level 38, Slugma will evolve into Magcargo, thus becoming a Fire/Rock type Pokémon. Although very weak to Water-type moves, the Lava Pokémon has a brittle shell that will quickly create flames, increasing the opponent's chance of getting burned.
A particularly fierce Magcargo appears in the episode “Some Like it Hot”, and is a creature that Pokémon trainer Egan hopes to catch. Egan, a fire-type specialist, repeatedly tried to catch the Lava Pokémon with his Flareon, but to no avail. Thankfully, Misty Egan offers some combat advice, which proved to be very helpful. Not long after finally capturing Magcargo, the Lava Pokémon uses its strength to help its new trainer when Team Rocket tries to cause trouble.
Houndoom is a fierce Dark/Fire type Pokémon

In Generation II, the Steel type and Dark type were introduced for the very first time. The latter type is well known to include Pokémon that love to battle and can be quite cunning, such as Incineroar and Mawile. However, it is unwise to assume that Pokémon of this type are evil creatures. After all, while the fast Dark/Fire-type Houndoom is known for having particularly dangerous Fire-type abilities, this Pokémon can also be very noble, and is even capable of Mega Evolving.
Aside from Harrison's loyal Houndoom, a good-natured Dark Pokémon appeared in “Houndoom's Special Delivery”, acting as a courier. While delivering items to clients for his trainer, Old Man Gon, Houndoom (nicknamed “Doomy” in the English dub) comes across Misty's lost Togepi. Over the course of the episode, Doomy not only cares for Togepi, but uses his strength to protect it from other Pokemon. This Houndoom was also nearly captured by Team Rocket, but was able to dispatch the group with a powerful flamethrower.

Both Ash and Dawn own these Fire-type Pokémon
Ash has a penchant for befriending all sorts of starter Pokemon, even those that once belonged to other trainers or those that live in the wild. A later example found in the Johto region is Ash's Cyndaquil, whom he encountered in a forest populated by the species. Cyndaquil, often considered the baby of the list, had a tendency to tire easily. But it was also very fast and capable of powerful flamethrower attacks, which only grew stronger after evolving into Quilava.
After evolving, Ash's Quilava matured and even learned the Intense Attack Burst, proving to be a helpful ally during the Lily of the Valley Conference. Meanwhile, Ash's friend Dawn would obtain a Pokemon Egg that would hatch into a baby Cyndaquil. Although shy at first, Cyndaquil formed a strong bond with Dawn when it hatched from its egg right in front of her. After evolving into Quilava, the Fire-type became very powerful and helped Dawn a lot in her Pokemon Contest battles.
Typhlosion has a large role in The Legend of Thunder!
Jimmy has a typhlosion as his partner Pokémon
In the made for TV movie The Legend of Thunder!the animated series counterpart to Ethan, Jimmy, is introduced. Like his video game counterpart, Jimmy is an energetic trainer from New Bark Town and was given his starter Pokémon, Cyndaquil, by Professor Elm. Together with his friends, trainer/coordinator Marina and trainer Vincent, Jimmy sets out on his journey. When The Legend of Thunder! begins, Jimmy has at least six Pokémon on his roster, including his now fully evolved Typhlosion.
During a fight with Marina's partner Pokémon, Feraligatr Wani-Wani, Jimmy's Typhlosion is shown to barely react to the opponent's Water Gun attack, showing its great strength. Like Ash and Pikachu, Jimmy and Typhlosion are best friends and extremely loyal to each other. When Team Rocket puts the legendary Pokémon Raikou in great danger, Typhlosion is part of the team that helps save the Electric-type Pokémon. Both the Fire-type and Jimmy finally said goodbye to Raikou, glad to see it safe.
Ho-Oh is one of Johto's top legendary Pokemon
A Pokémon with a phenomenal history and legacy
Alongside Lugia and Suicune, Ho-Oh is one of the mascot Legendary Pokémon in the Johto region. This beautiful bird Pokémon is a Fire/Flying type and is almost never seen, although some have encountered it after storms. The oldest example of this lies in the tragic story of the Brass Tower, which burned down during a terrible thunderstorm. After the fire died down and the citizens were left mourning the three Pokémon that perished in the disaster, Ho-Oh appeared and revived the three Pokémon into legendary beasts.
In the present, Ash and Pikachu noticed Ho-Oh beside a rainbow after an intense storm; this event would have a greater role in Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You! as Ash wanted to fight it. Meanwhile, in the main series, Ho-Oh appears very rarely, with only a few able to spot it. However, as seen in flashback, Ho-Oh is an incredible fighter and a master of its signature move, Sacred Fire.

A legendary Pokémon created by the Unown
The earlier Pokémon films are still some of the more popular films in the franchise's roster, an example being the third title. IN Pokemon 3: The Moviea scientist named Spencer Hale suddenly disappears while researching the unusual psychic-type Pokémon known as Unown, leaving his daughter Molly without a caretaker, as her mother disappeared before the events of the film. Grieving, Molly accidentally summons the Unown after looking through her father's research and tries to create a new home and family. Acting as her new “father” figure is a manifestation of Entei, who vows to take care of Molly.
Molly's desire for a mother ultimately results in the capture of Delia Ketchum, forcing Ash and his friends to navigate the palace Molly has allowed the Unown to create for her. Since the Entei was created with mysterious powers, no one, not even the Unowne, can understand, its powers are beyond a normal Entei. Ash's Charizard even enters the fray as it battles the unique Legendary Pokémon, though the two later stop fighting when Molly arrives and regrets her actions. It is also the Entei who fight against their own creators when the powers of the Unown threaten the entire Johto region, and despite the odds are able to defeat them.
