7 evolutions stronger than Charizard

Since debuting alongside Venusaur and Blastoise, Charizard has remained not only one of the most popular starter Pokémon, but one of the most famous Pokémon ever. Charizard is well known for its sheer power, as well as being one of the very first Fire/Flying type Pokémon alongside the legendary Pokémon Moltres. Flame Pokémon also have various Mega Evolutions, along with a fiery Gigantamax form.

However, there are several other fully evolved Pokémon that have a high chance of defeating Charizard in battle. For example, Water/Ground-type Swampert has a great type advantage that would likely put Charizard at risk. Meanwhile, the Steel/Psychic-type Metagross, while weak to shooting, has great defense and a great Mega Evolution.

Blaziken is a beloved legend from Hoenn

Blaziken comes from humble beginnings

Torchic is an adorable Fire-type starter that hails from the Hoenn region and is listed by the Pokédex as a fluffy, cute Pokémon that likes to be wherever the trainer is. Although it walks with unsteady steps like a Torchic, the Fire-type will later strengthen its legs via its evolutions, Combusken and Blaziken. The first known fully evolved Fire/Fighting-type, Blaziken, created a legacy of other Fire/Fighting-type starter Pokémon, later followed by Infernape and Emboar. However, the Blaziken is truly in a class of its own.

Blaziken's legs are so strong that it can leap over extremely tall buildings, and it coined the powerful move, Blaze Kick. It also has the ability to Mega Evolve into the Mega Blaziken, during which its stats increase enormously. Unfortunately, since Charizard is a flying type, Blaziken would be weak to its flying type attacks, nor would its fighting type moves do much damage. However, Mega Blaziken has the Speed Boost Ability, which would allow it to become much faster per turn. Blaziken can also learn moves like Thunder Punch and Stone Edge, and with the power of the Speed Boost Ability, it could very well bypass its type disadvantage and win a match against Flame Pokémon.

Swampert has a huge type advantage

Along with Blaziken and Sceptile, Swampert is one of the fully evolved starter Pokemon from the Hoenn region. Even like Mudkip, the Water/Ground type has always been a thoughtful Pokémon, and extremely in tune with even the most subtle changes in the weather. It can easily carry heavy objects while swimming and can even see through the murkiest water. Swampers in the wild are very rare, although they have been known to inhabit the shores of the Hoenn region.

Since it is a Ground-type and therefore often uses moves of this type, these attacks will not affect Fire/Flying-type Charizard. However, Swampert can easily rely on his super effective water type moves, or even a double super effective stone type move. Upon Mega Evolving, Mega Swampert will gain increased defense, with even better physical attack stats. Such a powerful Pokémon will certainly be a threat against a Charizard, even if the Flame Pokémon Mega evolves as well.

Salamence acted as Zinnia's Ace Pokemon

Bagon is a rare Dragon-type Pokémon from the Hoenn region, usually found in caves. These spirited Pokémon will often jump off cliffs in an attempt to fly, its greatest dream. After evolving into Shelgon, this elusive Pokemon will evolve into Salamence, a dragon/flying type Pokemon. According to some, Salamence's wish as a Bagon was so powerful that it changed the very cells, giving the Dragon Pokémon its heart's desire. Salamence, while very hot-headed, is also extremely happy to be able to fly, and will happily breathe fire as it soars through the air.

Zinnia, a formidable Pokémon trainer introduced in the Delta episode of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphirehas a Salamence as its cool Pokemon. Her story is further explained in “The Wish”, a Pokemon Evolutions episode, where she repeats her actions from the games and tries to summon Rayquaza to save Hoenn. However, the Lorekeeper makes peace with the fact that May is the chosen hero, even as she battles the new champion and her team. Zinnia's Salamence is already an extraordinarily powerful creature, yet its aura is shown to change after Mega Evolving. Being a Dragon/Flying-type, Salamence is resistant to both Charizard's Fire-type and Flying-type moves, and it can learn various Rock-type and Electric-type moves. With all these elements, as well as its well-rounded Mega Evolving stats, Mega Salamence could very well be a difficult opponent for Charizard.

Garchomp has an unforgettable legacy

Garchomp recently received a new mega evolution

Many years ago, a young girl was entrusted with the care of a Pokémon egg, which later hatched into a female Gible. The girl and her Gible became her first Pokémon and traveled through the Sinnoh region growing alongside each other, making new friends and even teammates over the years. In the present day, that particular Gible is now a fearsome Garchomp, never seen without her trainer and childhood friend, Cynthia. The champion of the Sinnoh region, Cynthia is notorious for having a team of rare and terrifyingly powerful Pokémon, with Mach Pokémon acting as the crown jewel of her roster.

While ground-type moves won't affect Charizard, Garchomp, being a dragon/ground-type, is highly resistant to fire-type moves. Like Salamence and Dragonite, Garchomp is known as a “pseudo-legendary” Pokémon by fans due to its impressive battle stats, and a true force to be reckoned with (especially if the Garchomp you're battling happens to be Cynthia's). Aside from knowing several rock-type moves, Garchomp will become even more fearsome when he evolves into Mega Garchomp and Mega Garchomp Z, though the latter has yet to be seen in the anime. Regardless, this is a fast-moving, hard-hitting Pokemon that could very well defeat a Charizard.

Metagross is fast and has an amazing mega evolution

pokemon-steven-metagross

Another popular Pokémon from the Hoenn region, Metagross, was a surprising asset to Steven Stone's team during the start of Generation III, as the Pokémon cannot be found in the wild. The only way for the player to get a Metagross of their own is after they become a Hoenn Champion, and they will later receive a Beldum as a gift. After evolving Beldum into Metang, the Steel/Psychic type will later evolve into Metagross at level 45. Metagross, while weak to the Fire-type moves that Charizard often relies on, has plenty of other traits that can still allow it to win a fight.

The Iron Leg Pokémon has great battle stats, with a base Attack stat of 135 and a Defense stat of 130. At the same time, it can also learn moves that allow it to dodge and resist powerful attacks, such as Iron Defense. Seen in the anime as well as the games, Mega Metagross has amazing stamina and some of the best battle stats among the Mega Evolved Pokémon. With these useful abilities, as well as moves like Stone Edge and Meteor Beam, a Metagross, especially a Mega Metagross, could very well still defeat Charizard even if it's a Steel type.

Dragonite's new Mega Evolution adds to its awesome strength

Pokemon Dragonite February 13

The first known fully evolved psuedo-legendary Pokemon, Dragonite is a tough Pokemon with a big heart. Dragon Pokémon start as a Dratini and then a Dragonair and have great base stats, including high Special Attack and high Defense. Dragonite has amazing strength, allowing it to fly over stormy seas without breaking a sweat. When flying, Dragonite has also been known to spot and rescue sailors battling the terrifying waves before they can drown.

To add to Dragonite's power, the Dragon Pokémon has recently received a Mega Evolution and become Mega Dragonite. The Dragon/Flying type is now even more compassionate in this state, defeating opponents quickly as it sees this act as merciful. The new Mega Evolution debuted in Pokémon Horizons: The Seriesand was shown to be able to easily use intense moves like Hyper Beam with the gem on his tail. With its regular strength and Mega Evolved state, along with its large movepool, Dragonite is sure to be a challenge for Charizard.

Tyranitar is an absolutely powerful Pokemon

Charizard is unfortunately very weak against rock-type

Fans of both the Johto region and pseudo-legendary Pokemon are highly likely to have Tyranitar as one of their all-time favorite Pokemon. The fully evolved form of Larvitar and Pupitar, Tyranitar starts out as a Rock/Ground type but becomes a Rock/Dark type Pokemon instead. As such, it is ill-suited to battles against Fighting-type Pokémon, and tends not to fare well against Water- or Grass-type Pokémon. However, it is very strong against Fire and Flying type Pokémon, making it a devastating opponent against Fire/Flying type Pokémon like Charizard.

Tyranitar already has great stats, though it will surely increase when Mega evolves into Mega Tyranitar. Only an experienced trainer should dare to Mega Evolve their Tyranitar, as the species, known for its often aggressive nature, becomes even more feral once Mega Tyranitar. In fact, some are unsure if a Mega Tyranitar can even hear its trainer's orders, as it becomes focused on fighting and nothing else. Such a powerful Pokemon, especially one with terrifying strength and a plethora of rock-like moves, will surely be able to defeat Charizard.
