When it comes to Dragon Ballsome enemies are too strong to be handled by a single person. When a Super Saiyan transformation isn't enough and the Spirit Bomb takes too long to recharge, our heroes resort to the ultimate trump card: Fusion. It is the act of two or more warriors combining their bodies, minds and power levels to form an entirely new being with strength that will not only be added together but multiplied to the level of something terrifying.
The methods of fusion have changed throughout the series, beginning with ancient Namekian rituals and then progressing to sacred artifacts of the gods. There are permanent fusions, short-lived fusions that can last as little as several minutes, and others that involve an extremely coordinated piece of dancing that would make a ballerina sweat. The nostalgic comeback of a fan favorite, or a drastic attempt to save the universe, here are the most powerful fusion techniques in history Dragon Ballstarting with the simplest and the most powerful ones available.
Dragon Ball: Super Saiyan 3 Fusion, explained
Many different types of fusion between the Saiyans have been shown, but there has never been one between 2 Super Saiyan 3!
Namekian Fusion
It is the most spiritual type of fusion and exclusive to the Namekian race. It is not performed by any dance or through earrings, but a soul-uniting ceremony where one Namekian becomes the host and takes in another's life force, memories and power. The most famous is the fusion of Piccolo with Nail on Namek and his emotional reunion with Kami in the Android Saga.
This is a permanent fusion and does not create a new personality. Unlike other fusions, Piccolo is still Piccolo, just much more powerful. He was the only Z-Fighter strong enough at one point to be considered the strongest Z-Fighter on Earth, even surpassing a Super Saiyan when he fused with Kami. Since it is based on the fixed power levels of Namekians, and not the explosive multipliers of Saiyans, it is not as strong as the others.
Absorption (Majin Buu & Cell Style)
Although technically a forced fusion, absorption is a biological theft of power. Cell consumed Androids 17 and 18 through his tail to get to his perfect form, but Majin Buu did it to a terrifying new extent. Buu consumed Gohan, Gotenks, and Piccolo by turning his body into a slimy trap, not only acquiring their power, but also their special moves and knowledge.
The only difference, in this case, is that the host is still in complete control and the victims are in an almost dreamlike state within. Buuhan (Buu with Gohan absorbed) was probably the most powerful antagonist of Dragon Ball Zand he forced Goku and Vegeta to fuse. It is a very powerful method of gaining power in a short period of time, although it does not have the ideal synergy and multiplier effect of a willing, synchronized combination of two equal warriors.
To be fair, this method was introduced in the 3DS game version of the anime and while it's not canon for the story but in terms of power scaling, it's still worth mentioning. This ability was introduced in the Expanded Universe by Dragon Ball Fusionsand involves a capsule company invention called the Metamor ring. It allows the merging of two characters that would not be able to merge (high and power difference) in the first place. The most popular are Karoly (Goku and Broly) or EX-Gogeta.
The fusion is stabilized by the rings, i.e. it is as long as the rings are worn. Although it offers a huge increase and amazing flexibility, it is usually not considered as clean as the traditional methods. It can bring two mutually hostile forces into contact and produce strange warped warriors with the power to oppose the gods, but it lacks the raw, natural explosive power of the more common fusion methods.
This is the most iconic fusion method that Goku acquired with Metamorans in the other world. Two warriors of equal size and strength are needed to give a complete symmetrical dance that ends with a meeting of the fingertips. Even an inch off, and you have a couple of weird and weak versions: Fat and Skinny, which can barely walk. Gotenks and fan favorite Gogeta are the most famous results.
Dragon Ball: Gogeta vs Vegito – Who is stronger?
Gogeta vs. Vegito – Two Fusion Titans, but only one can be the strongest! Who will win the ultimate Dragon Ball fusion showdown?
Fusion Dance produces a warrior with a large force multiplier, commonly referred to as tens of times greater than that of its constituents. It also allows users to access transformations like Super Saiyan Blue or even SSJ4. Its only drawback is that it has a time limit of 30 minutes, but this can be reduced if the fusion consumes excessive energy (like Stardust Breaker from Gogeta).
Potara Fusion (Holy Earrings)
The sacred earrings worn by Supreme Kais are called Potara earrings, but they also allow two beings to permanently merge, or so we originally thought, but the permanent phase is only the case with immortal beings. Two warriors simply place an earring on opposite sides of their ears to do so and their bodies violently pull together in an instant to fuse them together. No dancing and no need to have equal power levels.
In the case of mortals, this type of fusion lasts for one hour. Although this fusion is believed to be stronger than Fusion Dance by some fans, it is something that is still a hot topic of debate by DB community, since it does not require the more powerful partner to reduce its power to the same level as the weaker one, it is surely the more efficient one. It unleashes all potential, producing something so powerful that, in the case of Dragon Ball Superthe sheer amount of energy released by Vegito Blue was so huge as it shattered the earrings before time even ran out.
Dragon Ball: How Goku and Vegeta's new fusion could be the strongest
Dragon Ball Daima has introduced a brand new fusion method with Join Bugs, so here's how this fusion method can be the strongest!
Five-Way Fusion (Non-Canon)
This is the pure limit of the Fusion concept, shown in the finale of Dragon Ball Fusions story. Again, this method is non-canon. Although there is no indication that the custom fusion designs were done by Akira sensei himself or not, he was always fond of the idea of fusing characters. Rather than two individuals, this method combines five warriors into one gigantic being of pure energy.
The protagonist of the story used it to create a creature with so much power that it could have easily surpassed almost any other threat in the multiverse. Just imagine Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks and Goten being fused together? There wouldn't be any character from any anime universe that could take them on, let alone one from Dragon Ball.
