5 Companions That Were Much More Annoying Than You Remember They Were

The original Pokémon Anime is loved for many reasons, one being the actors. Ash Ketchum and his Pikachu are some of anime's most iconic heroes, and on their journey they encounter all sorts of trainers. Many of these people, trainers or otherwise, would also travel with Ash and become his lifelong friends.

However, there were some traveling companions, whether they were around for most of the season or only traveled with Ash for a little while, who weren't as beloved as other characters. In fact, although these characters are good-natured, they can often be annoying. Some of these characters lose those annoying streaks, but unfortunately that's not always the case.

Brock's Sudowoodo could be as clingy as a Bonsly

The Rock type became much calmer after evolving

Bonsly, a baby Pokémon introduced in Generation IV, is not actually a Grass-type. Bonsai Pokémon is a mischievous rock type with a plant-like appearance. But if you try to pour water on this “tree” it will run away. After evolving, Bonsly will transform into Sudowoodo, the Imitation Pokémon. Sudowoodo does not like to fight, so it tries to look as tree-like as possible to avoid a battle.

In the Kanto region, Brock finds a Bonsly all alone, crying because it was hungry and no one was around to care for it. Thus, Brock took on the role of Bonsly's caretaker, and was even his only companion when he arrived in Sinnoh. Being a baby, Bonsly was very needy and cried often, although its clingy behavior could be stressful at times. Thankfully, the Rock type became much more relaxed as it evolved, even serving as an older sibling to Brock's Happiny.

Many fans criticize Chloe's overall lack of character development

Chloe began to gain confidence thanks to Eevee

Like Serena and May before her, Chloe was introduced as someone unsure of what she wanted to do in life. Unlike her predecessors, however, Chloe initially only tried to have a realistic mindset, which made her come across as aloof or even cold. It was also shown that Chloe was previously not very fond of Pokémon. In fact, she was even unkind to her family's Yamper when it was first adopted, though Chloe came to regret these actions after the dog's Pokémon escaped.

Chloe began to break out of her shell for good, thanks to an Eevee that baffled Pokemon researchers, as she would not evolve. With Eevee by her side as her partner Pokémon, Chloe was able to become a true trainer and even began a career as a Pokémon artist. Overall, Chloe has received mixed reviews among fans, as many find it annoying that she didn't get much character development. Although her personality at the beginning of her debut was quite frustrating, Chloe later became a much more relaxed and friendly person.

Max can be the one who knows everything

May's brother often criticizes coaches even though he is not one

Unlike his sister, who once felt immense pressure from others to become a coach like his father, Max dreams of the day he can begin his coaching journey. To prepare for the day he is old enough to become a trainer, Max spends a lot of his time reading everything he can find about Pokémon. Because of his book smarts, Max knows a lot about Pokemon as well as battle tactics, but only in theory instead of practice. He gets the chance to learn more about Pokémon thanks to May, who takes care of him instead of his parents during their adventure.

Max is a kind hearted boy, but unfortunately he can be quite snobbish about what he has learned. In fact, he will even criticize Ash about his choices during battle, even though Max has yet to become a trainer. Despite this behavior, Max really looks up to Ash and is one of his sister's biggest supporters. Brock even served as a sort of mentor to Max, teaching him more about real life experiences with Pokémon.

Barry always rushes into everything

This rival character is legendary for his impatience

IN Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearland Pokemon Platinumthe player character is quickly introduced to a rowdy neighbor boy who dreams of becoming a coach. That boy is Barry, the player character's future rival, who is often noted by non-players as impatient and unable to sit still. One of Barry's famous sayings is that he will “fine” someone if they arrive later than him at their next destination. Part of why he wants to become a trainer so badly is because of his father, Palmer, one of the Frontier Brains of Sinnoh.

As seen in the anime, Barry retains the same personality as he has in the games, although he is somehow even more hyperactive. The energetic young trainer is not only one of Ash's rivals in the Sinnoh region, but a minor traveling companion, as seen for a brief period. However, Barry's anime counterpart is even more impatient and short-tempered, and easily upset over the smallest of things. His behavior can be so dysfunctional that his partner Pokémon, Empoleon, often finds himself embarrassed by his trainer.

Goh doesn't consider the importance of befriending Pokémon

A coach who cares more about catching than coaching

Often considered by fans and critics alike to be the characterization of Pokémon GOPokémon Trainer Goh acts as a secondary protagonist in Pokémon Journeys: The Series. While Ash dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master, Goh's dreams are less focused on his experience as a battler and more on what Pokémon he can catch. In fact, Goh dreams of catching all the known Pokémon in the world. His big dream, besides completing the National Pokédex, is to catch the Mythical Pokémon Mew and have it become his partner Pokémon.

While completing the National Pokédex is an incredible goal, Goh overlooks the importance of becoming better friends with the Pokémon he catches. In fact, early on he is so adamant about catching Mew first that he hurts the feelings of a Scorbunny who wanted to be his first partner Pokémon. Although Goh later agreed to do so, Cinderace, along with a couple of other Pokemon, would be the only members of his large roster that Goh took the time to get to know. In comparison, Ash, who was not as focused on completing his Pokédex, instead took the time to get to know each Pokémon he caught, earning the trainer the respect of fans and other characters alike.
