Every year it seems that the best games are dozens of hours long. My personal favorites for the past three years –Metaphor: RefantazioThe Baldur's Gate 3and The fire ring– have all consumed at least 100 hours of my life each, and even games with a more modest length, for example Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Can still often feel like a big company.
As you might imagine me, I have to play a lot of games for my career (what a tragedy), so I've done my best to spend my non-work-related playing hours on trim, brief experiences. And while I think I will always be partly for longer games, short games also have a special place in my heart. Here are some that I think are worth more attention.
Leaving EP
I am surprised at how much I like this game, because it really is not my cup of tea on paper. It is a visual novel, which is not a genre I tend to force myself to, and its dialogue is quite cheese -like in a way that can so easily be considered annoying. But actually, Leaving EP Is charming, funny and unexpectedly moving. Some male tears threaten to crawl out of me when I think about this game, partly because of its subject – a beloved death – but also because of its developmental context. Leaving EP was directed by Mohammad Fahmi, who died just before it was released, which made the game's story unpleasantly relevant. Fahmi can rest a little easier to know that his last project was an excellent and well worth checking out.

Endling: Extracting is forever
I was not going to include back-to-back tears, but here we are. As the name suggests, Endling: Extermination Is forever is about the devastating impact of humanity on nature. It is told from the last adult's perspective on the earth, as she tries to keep her kids safe and prepared for the brutally indifferent world they have just entered. It is a thought -provoking and heartbreaking work that makes you marvel at the beauty of the natural world while you are shaking in the wasteful idiom of humanity's rebellion against it.

Octodad: Dadliast Catch
If for some reason you don't really feel like getting down the dumps this weekend, Octodad: Dadliast Catch May be more of your speed. Funny fact: This is the game that made me buy a PS4 at the launch. I must have been on something, then Octode Is really creative, innovative and funny. Its Qwop-The like movement mechanics can be difficult to get used to at first, but when you get them down, fly around its levels with absurd speed and elegance. Its story is simple and stupid, with more than a few lateral pieces and jokes hidden within their short Runtime.

Ghostrunner
If you do not want to feel depressed or laugh at your own absurdity, you may be content to feel like a complete badass. Ghostrunner is a quick, non-holder-barred action game that requires perfection with every record, jump and wallrun. You will die over and over again before you conquer the game's toughest meetings, but it's all worth it in the end. Once you get into the swing of things, you will feel unstoppable, like a buzzing house flight of death or a ballerina killer. It's a damn good time – just keep your head cool.
