27yo’s wild move after being made redundant

Amie Maclaine is fleeing the country after being fired from her full-time marketing job and feels absolutely liberated.

She plans to spend all her money, has no return date, and is very eager to get out and live her life.

“I was fired from my job. So I booked a one-way flight to Europe and plan to spend every penny in my bank account with no plan for the other side,” she shared online.

It might seem drastic, bordering on irresponsible, but for the young worker it seems like the right response to losing his job.

Ms Maclaine, 27, lives in Canberra and has always made conservative choices. She went to university, got a graduate job and worked her way up… and then the corporate ladder was taken away from her while she was still climbing it.

The young worker was “shocked” when her employer informed her she would be made redundant.

“The dismissal was a huge shock. The group has let go of the entire marketing team, which is really sad,” he told news.com.au.

The dismissal wasn’t immediate, and Ms. Maclaine, earning an annual salary of $85,000, spent the next two weeks going into the office as if she hadn’t just lost her job.

“I was in a huge state of shock. It was difficult to accept going to work every day with everyone still having a job,” she admitted.

When Ms Maclaine first found out she had lost her job, she kept it to herself and felt “embarrassed” even though she knew she had done nothing wrong.

It wasn’t until he talked to his friends that he realized how common it was. Around the same time, three of his friends living across Australia had also been made redundant.

It made her want to talk about it.

“Just because you get fired doesn’t mean your life is over,” he said.

It also made her start thinking about what she wanted her life to be like.

Did he need to get on SEEK and start applying for other jobs or was it time to reset?

The 27-year-old was currently living at home with her mother and wasn’t paying “stupid amounts of rent” for the first time in years, so she was in a good position to not have to go straight to her next job.

Ms Maclaine was in her early 20s when the pandemic hit and has been grieving the loss of time ever since.

She should have been out partying, traveling and dating, but instead she was housebound and taking rapid antigen tests.

“I felt like I lost the youth of my 20s because of the pandemic,” she said.

Also adding to the pressure of the pandemic was the fact that Ms. Maclaine had spent much of her twenties doing adult things.

“In 2021, my dad died of cancer, and then last year, one of my best friend’s brothers died of cancer, and he was only 28,” she said.

The combination of loss and job loss made her realize something.

“Life is too short,” he said.

Sure, he could stay, save his money, get another job and continue with the 9-to-5 hustle, or he could use this moment as an opportunity.

“Once I accepted it, I thought: this is a great opportunity to travel. To check it off on my list of things I’ve always wanted to do,” she said.

Also, when would this opportunity arise again? Of course, it was imposed on her, but it also allowed her to reevaluate herself.

“When will I be given another opportunity like this? Being forced to take time off, and I didn’t have to resign to take six months off,” she said.

At this moment, for the first time in centuries, she feels so “liberated” and sees redundancy as a “blessing in disguise.”

“I’m very lucky that the layoff hasn’t shaken up my life too much, I haven’t had any financial difficulties and it’s given me the opportunity to do the things I love,” she said.
