We have finally seen the two biggest films in 2025. This is because Disney released trailers for Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash.
These films do not seem to have much in common, apart from their shared Disney parenting. One is a Buddy COP movie for children located in a city with anthropomorphic animals; The other is a sci-fi action epic that serves visual splendor as relaxed as Marvel movies serve quips. But Avatar and Zootopia will have a similar effect: defibrillation of the 2025 cash office in the bang of the time.

2025 drags after the last-capable years
2025 has been a strange year for the cash register so far, despite the theaters offering a wide range of large budget films. At this time 2024, two of this year's billions, Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, had already met theaters, with only Moana 2 waiting in the wings. This year, only a Hollywood movie has made it past that milestone, Live-Action Lilo & Stitch adaptation.
Inside Out 2 and Deadpool 3 steps past the billion brand and ended their runs by $ 1.699 billion and $ 1.338 billion respectively. Despite his famous manic energy, however, Stitch barely managed to crawl over the line. More than two months in, the family movie has stayed at $ 1.019 billion. In the same way, in 2023, both billions (Barbie, Super Mario Bros. movie) had already met theaters at this point.
That hit schedule makes sense. Summer tends to be the biggest season for film. Children are out in school. Families are looking for something to do to kill the time. Everyone is drawn to air conditioning as grinding to a flame. Hollywood plans its release scheme accordingly and fills theaters with its most expensive glasses from May to July.
August tends to be a quieter month, which makes sense as the children start returning to school.
Hollywood followed the same playlist this year. This summer has been full of blockbuster: Lilo & Stitch, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Karate Kid: Legends, Jurassic World: Rebirth, F1: The Movie, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, How To Train Your Laton, Ballerina, Ballerina, Ballerina, Ballerina, Ballerina, ballerina, ballerina, ballerina, ballerina, ballerina, ballerina, bellf Some of these films have done surprisingly well – F1 is Apple's first real theater success – but most have stayed long before reaching a billion.
Do we need to lower the bar?
It is enough with a trend that Hollywood observers are starting to question whether a billion is still a viable benchmark. Box Office analyst Scott Mendelson claimed that there are dangers in $ 1 billion as the blockbuster brand -success.
Mendelson notes that only four films passed the milestone between 2003 and 2009. That many films passed billions of the 2012 brand alone, as 3D and Imax became more widespread. 2019 was the moment we crossed Rubicon, but because nine films made more than a billion dollars all over the world.
It was the culmination of half a decade of success, with 25 films that reached the level of success between 2015 and 2019.
Mendelson points out that since the pandemic began, this level of success has become rare again. Much of this has to do with collapse of superhero films, which was once a sure thing at the checkout. Joker: Folie A Deux and Marvel's, sequel to billions of hits, were notorious flops and the eager expected Superman and Fantastic Four will probably not get anywhere close to a billion.

The end of 2025 has two sequels for billions-wholes' waiting in the wings, which will not be victims of that trend. Family films like Zootopia 2 are as strong as they have ever been. The Super Mario Bros. movie was the second highest movie 2023. Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 were the highest and third highest gross films from 2022. So far, the two highest films from 2025, Lilo & Stitch and a Minecraft film are also family films. Although nothing is a sure thing in 2025, family films (especially sequel) are as close as it gets.
The first zootopia made over a billion all over the world back in 2016. The previous success, and the length of the time between films, means that the film will probably benefit from the same demographic headwinds that increased inside and out 2. “Gentleminions” Tiktok trend.
Zootopia 2, regardless of quality, is likely to sail past a billion.
Avatar: Fire and Ash also has the advantage of being a sequel to a billion-griper, but in this case it is the sequel to two of the biggest films of all time. The first avatar earned almost three billion at the checkout, and the road for water was also no slouch, with $ 2.32 billion when everything was said and done.
When a movie is the sequel to not one, but two, of the three most large films of all time, it would require an unmatched collapse so as not to crack billions of brand. Unlike Superman, whose gross has been extremely domestically heavy, Avatar is a huge global franchise. Avatar: The waterway earned $ 245 million alone in China, with huge hold of other countries as well. Avatar 3, as Avatars 1 and 2, will be huge.
This means that the year will close with two billion films in quick succession (although Avatars release date December 19 means that much of the gross tone will come during the new year). We do not need to lower our expectations for blockbuster movies. 2025 will not be a worse year than 2023 or 2024. It will only take longer for it to get there.
