2024 MG Cyberster to cost six figures

There could be a pricing shock in store for enthusiasts looking to get their hands on MG’s new drop-top electric sports car, the Cyberster.

MG announced this week that its radical Cyberster will be the brand’s most expensive model, with a price tag of around $100,000 and potentially up to $150,000.

For a Chinese auto brand that has focused on value-oriented pricing in recent years, this is a huge leap into territory occupied by luxury brands like BMW, Audi and even Porsche.

But there’s already a cheaper Cyberster model in the wings, one that could take advantage of the all-important fringe benefit tax exemption that’s fueling EV sales growth.

“There may be a more affordable variant in the future,” admitted Akshat Abuja, Senior Product and Strategy Manager at MG Australia, when asked if the Cyberster could take advantage of the FBT exemption.

“With the Cyberster we are launching our 77kWh (battery) all-wheel drive variant, but we are in discussions with headquarters to perhaps introduce another variant or whatever in the future… based on customer demand.”

Confirming the arrival of the MG Cyberster in late 2024 this week, MG national sales director Brad Chruszcz confirmed that the high-performance sports car will come with a top-tier price tag.

“Dealers are taking orders as we speak, with the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) set to be between $100,000 and $150,000,” he said.

“At this stage, the all-wheel drive Cyberster promises to be a compelling yet refined drive as we look to bring just the 77kWh AWD variant to Australian shores.”

That puts it up against established, open sports cars, including the Porsche 718 Boxster.

But MG claims the Cyberster will bring new levels of open-air performance for the money. The brand claims it will reach 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds.

This is something Abuja believes will make it an attractive proposition for those purchasing a car that offers driving thrills.

“It’s a sports car,” he said, adding “it’s a unique product.”

“I would compare that car to other sports cars that probably cost three or four times the price.”

Clearly, though, there’s an opportunity to cut fancier sports cars, something Abuja says will likely happen later in the car’s life cycle.

And while any variant of the Cyberster is unlikely to be a bargain, it could at least take advantage of state incentives for electric vehicles and play in the space where 90% of the electric car sales action takes place.

In any case, the Cyberster is the closest thing to what many associate with MG: a two-door, two-seat open-top sports car.

Only the EV version probably won’t have the reputation for unreliability of some of the earlier British-made ones.
